3 Strike Rule
It was difficult to start off with strong classroom management; this was a new age group and a new class, and it was hard to know what to expect. I did find that one of the best things I did for classroom management was establish a 3 strikes rule.
I had a difficult class one day with my Grade 9's and decided to implement a new management strategy the next day. Students would be given 3 chances.
The first strike would be a warning;
the second strike would mean the were moved to a new spot;
and a third strike would mean the whole class received a seating plan.
This seemed to get their attention and the next class was significanlty better than the previous one. I also gave out one strike that week just to show that I meant business. I didn't end up having to give anybody 3 strikes, so the class avoided a seating plan. I also made sure that I told my new Grade 9's at term change about this rule early on so they understood exactly what I expected as the teacher.

Dim the Lights
With my older students I found a strategy that worked well in keeping the class under control was just dimming the lights. Most of the classes were work periods where students would work on projects; I would give an introduction that day then dim the lights and let them get to work. It took me about a month before I found out how effective this strategy was. I think this is evidence that it is alright to try new strategies as a teacher and see what works and what doesn't!

Implementing Student Interests
I think one of the best ways to have a mutual respect with students is to show that you are interested in them and their interests. So one of the things I tried to do was to use student interests in assignments and examples.
Below is a students Whow Am I sheet and I made an excel example based right off of his interest in Football. This one is relevant to me because it shows how we can implement interest even in subject areas like mathematics.
